The Comfort of Old Friends

There's a magic in old friends, I believe.

They're like the tan lines left by your watch or the imprint of your feet in your shoes. They're the outline of your phone in the pocket of your favorite jeans. They've grown familiar.

You may catch up for a few minutes, but often, simply being in their presence, in your living room, is comforting.

You understand each other's history.

They tease you about your deepest insecurities, but it's only because they know you well. They've silently strengthened the bond between you when you weren't noticing. Even when life gets hard, they fill the gaps you feel within yourself.

Perhaps they haven't seen your new life or met your new friends. You may feel a gap between the person you were when you saw them daily and the person you are now.

But then they crack a joke that only the two of you would get, and that widening gap seems to float a little bit closer together.
